Students will have to take guard against falling into the distractionary traps in a technology-driven world, opined Prof G V Sreekumar, professor of design at the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, while delivering a keynote address on ‘Design and Education: a Collaborative Journey’ at the JAIN (Deemed-to-be University’s) Summit of Future in Kochi on Sunday.

He said art has a lot of purposes in our life, while design will help us ease our life. He elaborated his point, citing the example of how a 12-year-old school girl redesigned the water supply system in her school.

“The taps were designed in such a way that diminutive girls found it difficult to drink water. A girl found a solution to this issue by redesigning the structure of the pipes. It helped all the students fetch water. That’s how design affects our lives,” he said.
